Stop the military recruiters in our schools!
Taking Out We Are Not Your Soldiers To Teachers.
Hey all,
Today we went out to a progressive teachers conference down in Washington. Met with a whole bunch of teachers that have numerous stories about how the recruiters prey on young people. One person told a story about how a recruiter was preying on a develomentally disabled person. They kept calling and when she told them that he was developmentally disabled, they still kept calling. How sick is that! They will try and dupe any person they can into fighting. These motherfuckers are getting pretty desperate. At one school, the military band played at an assembly and announced that people should join up so that they could get good job training and kill iraqis. They literally said "Kill Iraqis". The administrator made them apologize. It is clear that we have many teachers on our side who have the best interest of their students and don't want to see them kill and die for empire. Teachers were also very interested in having Iraq Vets Against The War coming in and speak, particularly because it gives a whole lot of validity when you have these vets talking about the war crimes they committed. One of our speakers, a vet actually witnessed innocent people being rounded up and tortured. We are one of the few groups that is really going out to build resistance to the military and recruiters through teachers and students, through telling them the truth about these wars, what it is there fighting for and testimony from ex-troops talking about the innocent people they murdered. We got some really great contacts and handed out packets with the We Are Not Your Soldier DVD, the letter to teachers, the What Are They Recruiting For Brochure, Bios of Speakers and The IVAW truth in recruiting flier. One teacher told us that some of her students had asked recruiters if they could put opt out form on the recruiting table, the recruiter said yes and then when the student walked away ripped them up. We need to go full force this fall and get into as many classrooms as we can. We have some of the best resources and speakers in the anti-war movement and we can really break the question of recruiters and the illegitimacy of the war open. We Are Not Your Soldiers was very well recieved and I think that we need to start getting a buzz going on about it, beyond Oct 6.
